The Tech Prep process is one of the dynamic delivery systems being implemented by Home Economics Careers and Technology instructors in school districts and the Regional Occupational Centers / Programs (ROCP) across the state. Sites that have effectively implemented the Tech Prep process will exhibit these characteristics:

  • Standards-based redesigned secondary curriculum
  • Integrated academic and career pathway content
  • Career exploration, counseling and guidance
  • Sequenced and articulated courses, grades 9-14
  • Contextual learning
  • Partnerships with business and industry
  • Work-based learning experiences
  • FHA-HERO chapter student/leadership activities
  • Associate and/or baccalaureate degree potential
  • Career pathway with strong labor market outlook and potential for higher wages.

As a result of the services and products developed and implemented through Tech Prep grants, students will be well prepared to enter the workforce and/or transition to advanced training and education. To achieve this outcome, school personnel are committed to the dissemination and replication of this model throughout the state.

Currently Tech Prep Requests for Proposals are being funded at Los Angeles Mission College and Los Angeles Trade Technical College to provide services and products in two career pathways: Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation and Fashion and Interiors, respectively. These two career pathways are important not only to the state's economy, but also the local economy and job markets that impact the geographic areas of these two community colleges.
