Professional Development ActivitiesThe Home Economics Careers and Technology (HECT) Programs, California Department of Education and the Professional and Curriculum Development project, California State University, Fresno are pleased to announce a complete schedule of statewide activities.  The conferences, workshops, seminars and institutes are designed to assist Home Economics Careers and Technology teachers and administrators to expand and improve programs and increase the level of performance of the students enrolled. 

 

The professional development (in-service) activities are designed to fulfill the unique needs of Home Economics Careers and Technology educators as they implement new career pathways focused on standards-based instruction and assessment.   These activities will provide the latest information, improve the teaching and learning process, emphasize standards-based curriculum and assessment, integrate FHA-HERO leadership and career development, provide funding information and reinforce academic achievement.  Both new and experienced professionals will benefit from the workshops, seminars and conferences designed to keep the HECT Program on the “cutting edge”. The Lodging and Food Service Industry Training
Professional Development Workshop
Riverside, CA
June 23 - 27, 2008

This five-day workshop is planned for high school and ROCP Home Economics Careers and Technology teachers who are interested in establishing or expanding a program to train students for the Lodging and Food Service Industry.  Participants will have an opportunity to learn about all aspects of the industry through job shadowing and hands-on experiences in a full service hotel. Orientation to the industry will include tours to other hotels in the area as well as training in hotel departments such as reception/front desk/reservations; housekeeping/laundry; food and beverage; banquets and catering; room service; concierge; security and maintenance. Curriculum resources and standards-based instruction will be featured.

The workshop will begin with registration at 11:30 am and a luncheon at noon on Monday, June 23 and end on Friday June 27 at 3:00 pm.  Each day's sessions will be begin at approximately 7:00 am and end at approximately 7:00 pm . 

Two academic graduate semester units of credit will be available from California State University, Fresno for full attendance at the workshop.  Registration information will be available at the opening session.

All workshop participants must stay at the hotel at the reduced rate of $84 plus taxes per night single occupancy. Reservations must be made by calling the HECT Professional Development office at (559) 278-4236, prior to June 1. A credit card number is required to secure hotel reservation. Each participant is responsible for payment of their hotel bill.

Self-parking is $8 per day.

HECT 2008 Summer Institutes
August, 2008

This year, since the HECT Leadership and Management Conference is scheduled for June, 2009, one-day HECT Summer Institutes will be held in August 2008 in four locations.  These Institutes will provide important information for the 2008-2009 program year.

Imagine a California where HECT programs will be more powerful, effective and visible! Join your colleagues to “kick off” the 2008-2009 school year by attending a reception and one-day meeting! Plan now to attend and implement the California vision for a successful HECT program at your school.

Now is the time to stand up and be counted on to spread word of the wonderful career choices available for students enrolled in our discipline. You will have the opportunity to connect with colleagues and visit exhibitors to learn about new resources and materials at the Golden California Reception the evening prior to each Summer Institute. 

     The sessions will focus on:

           Trends for the Future  (Where do we want to be?)
           Smart Strategies for Informing Your Publics
           New Perkins Program Directions (You and the district plan!)
           Connecting to Successful Programs

Includes: Golden California Reception, continental breakfast, lunch and resources. Registration will begin at 5:00 pm and the reception will be held from 6:00-9:00 pm. For the one-day meeting registration will begin at 7:00 am and the meeting will begin at 8:00 am and end at 4:30 pm.

Policies and Registration Information
 

Registration Policies:

Registrations are accepted on a full payment, first come, first served basis.

  • The professional development office is unable to accept purchase orders or credit cards.

  • To reserve a space in the workshop, the registration form and fees must be received THREE WEEKS prior to the activity.  Please inform the district office of this policy and deadline.

  • The professional development activities are designed for home economics careers and technology teachers, administrators, counselors, teacher educators and pre-service university students.  Teachers from other disciplines, will be admitted only as space permits.

  • College and University students who are majoring in Home Economics

  • Careers and Technology Education may register for $30.00 off the registration fee.  Contact the professional development office for further information.

  • Enrollment is limited to 35-50 participants for workshops and 300-500 participants for conferences.  Once the maximum quota is reached, a waiting list will be established.

  • If maximum registration is not attained, on-site registration will be permitted only if a telephone call is received in the office to inform of intent to register.  The office will inform you if space is available.

Confirmation:

  • When registration is received with full payment, a letter confirming enrollment and additional information will be mailed to the participant’s home address.

  • Please take the confirmation letter with you to the workshop/conference.

  • If you do not receive a confirmation letter one week prior to the activity date, check with the district office to confirm that the registration was submitted to the professional development office.  If payment has not been received from you or your district, you will be required to submit payment at registration.

  •  Do not go to the activity unless you receive a confirmation letter or advance approval from the professional development office.

 

Workshop Cancellation:

  • Workshops will be cancelled if advance registration is less than 25.

  • Refunds for registration will be granted only if a written request is received two weeks prior to the activity.

  • There will be a $25.00 handling fee for all registration cancellations.
