Accepting the Challenge: Profiles of Home Economics Careers and Technology Programs highlights 5 California school sites who accepted the challenge of establishing programs that reflect the vision outlined in Careers and Technology, Standards Grades 9 - 12.

Sites implementing the Tech Prep process through a Home Economics Related Occupations Career Pathway:

  Johansen High School, Modesto City Unified School District
Food Service and Hospitality
   Bell Gardens High School, Montebello Unified School District
   Rubidoux High School, Jurupa Unified School District
Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation
   Scripps Ranch High School, San Diego City Unified School District


The Tech Prep process is one of the dynamic delivery systems being implemented by Home Economics Careers and Technology instructors in school districts and the Regional Occupational Centers / Programs (ROCP) across the state. Sites that have effectively implemented the Tech Prep process will exhibit these characteristics:

  • Standards-based redesigned secondary curriculum
  • Integrated academic and career pathway content
  • Career exploration, counseling and guidance
  • Sequenced and articulated courses, grades 9-14
  • Contextual learning
  • Partnerships with business and industry
  • Work-based learning experiences
  • FHA-HERO chapter student/leadership activities
  • Associate and/or baccalaureate degree potential
  • Career pathway with strong labor market outlook and potential for higher wages and a career.

As a result of the services and products developed and implemented through Tech Prep grants, students will be well prepared to enter the workforce and/or transition to advanced training and education. To achieve this outcome, school personnel are committed to the dissemination and replication of this model throughout the state.
