Family & Human Services

As our society become increasingly complex, our senior population continues to grow, and nuclear families become "multigenerational" with older family members interacting daily with younger ones, the demand for qualified individual and family services counselors and elderly caregivers will continue to grow as well.  Working to help people live more comfortably, solve problems successfully, and resolve conflict are just a few of the many aspects of family and human services work.  Additionally, very few other professions can claim to have such a positive impact on people's lives, as well as be so personally rewarding.

Students pursuing the Family and Human Services career path program study:

• professional behavior and standards;
• laws and regulations affecting service providers and their clients;
• basic principles of nutrition, health, safety and first aid;
• human development and related needs;
• consumer assistance;
• daily living needs of individuals and families;
• home management skills;
• appropriate and sensitive interaction with culturally diverse families and communities.
  
  

Students also learn employment and management skills for careers in family and social services and elder care services. Occupation-specific  curriculum includes positive guidance, direction and discipline; social involvement for individuals and families; common problems in individuals and families; social involvement for the elderly; and common problems of the elderly

While social work was less popular in the 80s, the 90s and beyond will see a tremendous boom  in the need for social and human services.  Projected highest growth areas include practices centering on children and the elderly.  Additionally, even thought many in social service are turning to private practice, human services workers will see a growth spurt as relevant social programs, such as group counseling and day care for the elderly, gain popularity.
