Successful Event! Culinary Arts Skills Workshop
January 23-25, 2009
Institute of Technology, Culinary Division, Clovis, CA

Klaus Tenbergen, Workshop Coordinator, Chef, Kimberly Lulay, Chef/Consultant
and Kris Moon, HECT teacher,  Redondo Union High School

“An awesome experience, with skilled, passionate, well prepared presenters, made learning fun and exciting, “ was a comment by one of the workshop participants! Thirty-five Home Economics Careers and Technology Food Service and Hospitality high school and Regional Occupational Teachers from across California came together in Clovis to experience the world of professional cooking and baking at the Institute of Technology .  The workshop, taught by Klaus Tenbergen, Assistant Professor and Culinology Program Director at CSU, Fresno, provided exciting firsthand experiences in a professional kitchen and exposed teachers to classroom management skills.  Ways to fillet a whole salmon and cook it on a Himalayan Salt Brick, was demonstrated by Culinary Olympic Team member, Ambarish Lulay, who is now Chef de Cuisine at the Ahwahnee Hotel, Yosemite National Park .   Teachers practiced bread shaping and  baking skills with a Master Baker,  perfected chocolate desserts, learned how to make gelatin flowers for catering presentations as well as standards-based assessment techniques to use with their students.  Upon returning to their respective schools, teachers will implement these new strategies in their classrooms.
Students comments: I'm inspired and renewed with ideas to use in the classroom, Great, workshop was extremely helpful, every minute was well spent.

HECT Professional Development Activities

Teachers and administrators have expressed concern that workshops have been cancelled. In order to hold scheduled workshops, registration must meet the minimum number established for each event. The current HECT Professional Development is operating with less funding. Therefore, registration fees must be able to support the workshops.  It is critical that registration forms and fees are submitted by the deadline dates so that participants can be advised prior to the cancellation of professional development activities.  Teachers are encouraged to sign up for the scheduled workshops and the Leadership and Management Conference that will be held June 24 -26, 2009 in Sacramento. Perkins funds are available for teachers to attend professional development activities.  To check on the availability of funds, teachers should contact the individual, in their school district, who is responsible for Perkins Funds.

SB 70 Funds Allocated for FHA-HERO

FHA-HERO and the other five Career Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) will each be receiving an allocation from SB 70 funds. The legislation specifies that the funds must be used by all of the six organizations to increase membership and the number of chapters as well as participation in activities at all levels of the organizations.  The areas in which funds will be expended include: chapter incentives, industry partnerships, media and resource development, and state-level coordination. Incentives will be provided for existing FHA-HERO chapters based upon established criteria and growth as well as for new and reinstated chapters. New and reinstated chapters will receive an extra allocation to assist advisors and members with start-up costs. Detailed information about available funding and criteria can be found at http://hect.org/fhahero/sb70/sb70_funding.html.

Program Data Survey and FHA-HERO Directory Information

From Ms. DeBenedetti's office, survey forms were sent to all HECT teachers and FHA-HERO Advisors for whom we have email addresses with a request to complete and submit two forms: the HECT Program Data and FHA-HERO Chapter Directories. If teachers did not receive the email requests, they should send an email to me at jdebened@cde.ca.gov .  The forms will be sent upon request.  A special thanks to the teachers from approximately 125 sites that have already responded.

HECT and FHA-HERO WebPages under Reconstruction

The two web pages are being redesigned. The “reconstruction” is intended to make the pages more user-friendly and will include more resources.  The redesign process is scheduled to be completed March.

 Program of Study

Six statewide Tech Prep Distribution Point Projects are in the process of developing “programs of study” for each industry sector.  Essentially, a “program of study” is an articulated sequence of courses in a specific career pathway that leads to a certificate or a degree. For HECT Industry-related sectors, “programs of study” are being developed for child development, fashion, interior design, food service, as well as hospitality and tourism career pathways.  HECT teachers assisting with this effort include: Shirley Bowers, New San Juan High School, Citrus Heights; Sandi Coulter, New San Juan High School, Citrus Heights; Kerri Doll, Fountain Valley High School, Fountain Valley, Erevetta Marzette, Dorsey High School, Los Angeles; and Pat Peck, Folsom High School, Folsom. Information about the programs of study will be distributed at the 2009 Leadership and Management Conference.

If you have questions or need further information, please contact Ms. DeBenedetti either by telephone at (916) 323-5025 or by email at jdebened@cde.ca.gov.

The California Association FHA-HERO State Officer Team, voted to make HECT teacher recruitment a priority.   As a result a new poster has been designed and produced to encourage students to consider a career as a Home Economics Careers and Technology Education Teacher.

The new poster is ready to display in every HECT classroom and counseling office!  Order Yours today!

New HECT Standards

With the completion of the newly revised Career Technical Education Standards, there are now State Board of Education approved and adopted standards for Home Economics Careers and Technology Education programs grades 7-12.  There are three distinct sets of standards for secondary HECT programs:  Consumer and Family Studies (CFS) for grades 7-8; Consumer and Family Studies (CFS) for grades 9-12; and Home Economics Related Occupations (HERO) Career Pathway standards for grades 10-12.

In the CTE Standards document, all of the standards for Consumer and Family Studies are listed under the Foundation Standard #10 in one of the three sectors directly related to the CFS content areas.  The sectors include Education, Child Development and Family Services (related CFS content areas of child development, consumer education, family and human development, and individual and family health); Fashion and Interior Design (related CFS content areas of fashion, textiles, and apparel; and Housing and Furnishings); and Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation (related CFS content areas of food and nutrition and individual and family health).  The new CTE and HECT Career Pathway and standards subcomponents as well as only the CFS standards, without standards details, are posted on the State Board of Education web site: http://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/ .

It is important to note that only teachers credentialed to teach Consumer and Family Studies (Single subject credential in Home Economics) should provide instruction in the CFS content areas. And only those teachers with appropriate occupational/industry experience and a credential to teach Home Economics Related Occupations (HERO) Career Pathway courses should provide instruction based upon the career pathway standards.  The standards are designed to facilitate sequenced and articulated instruction using CFS introductory and concentration courses as a foundation for the HERO Career Pathway capstone courses.

To assist Home Economics Careers and Technology Education teachers, a new resource entitled Consumer and Family Studies Standards Implementation Resource Guide, Grades 7-12 was introduced at the 2007 Leadership and Management Conference.  All of the CFS standards, grades 7-12, with standards detail are included in this resource. The standards details provide additional information that is lacking for the CFS standards included in the CTE Standards Document as well as on-line.

Change for Family Living and Parenting Education

The name for the CFS content area of Family Living and Parenting Education was changed to Family and Human Development. This change was made for several reasons, but primarily to reflect the titles of courses that can be effectively sequenced to qualify for Perkins funding as well as to develop courses that meet the UC and CSU A-G admission requirements.

Recommended Course Titles

In response to the requests of administrators and teachers for a list of courses that would reflect today’s HECT programs, the HECT State Staff developed a resource which includes the titles of introductory, concentration, and capstone courses by content area, career pathway, and industry sector.  The titles were developed with input from HECT teachers representing various regions of the state.  Click on the "Recommended Course Titles" button on the HECT home page.

 HECT Public Relations Materials

A set of public relations materials that includes information briefs about the overall secondary Home Economics Careers and Technology program in California as well as specific ones that address Consumer and Family Studies as well as each of the eight Home Economics Related Career Pathway programs and FHA-HERO.  In addition a resource entitled “Frequently Asked Questions” in included in the packet to address commonly asked questions.    Additional copies of this resource may be purchased through the Home Economics Careers and Technology Curriculum and Professional Development Project at CSU, Fresno for the price of $2.50 per packet or 10 packets for $20.00.
