Stop the Violence
The National Student Organization Family, Community and Career Leaders of America is sponsoring a program aimed at stopping violence. A brief summary of the program may be found on the national FCCLA web site at www.fcclainc.org/.

The following is an excerpt from the national page concerning Stop The Violence.

Violence seems to be everywhere for American young people. From grade school bullies to hallway fights to tragic school shootings, you observe or experience violence on a regular basis. And that's just in school-actually one of the safest places for youth! Violence in the community, in homes and in the media invades our lives almost every day.

You're no stranger to violence, but you may not know what you can do to prevent it. Violence is like that. It makes us feel frightened and powerless. But there are things young people can do.

You can choose nonviolent attitudes and actions, and encourage your peers to do the same. You can learn and teach skills to handle anger, solve problems and get along with others. You can recognize warning signs that suggest someone may be headed for violence and take steps to get help for them. You can urge your peers to break the "code of silence" and report troubling behavior, to help keep everyone safe. You can be part of a movement to build student "ownership" of your school and create an atmosphere of zero tolerance for violence and unlimited potential for learning and belonging.

You can be part of STOP the Violence - Students Taking On Prevention. With the right attitudes, skills and resources, you can make your school and neighborhood safer.

"So, THAT's what you're gonna do."
I like it!"

Two California High Schools who have completed the "Stop the Violence Projects"

Lompoc High School
Students at Lompoc High School sponsored a school-wide conference on STOP the Violence on March 16. They included representatives and advisers from each of the school's student organizations. FCCLA students presented factual information on youth violence, recreated parts of the STOP the Violence training and talked about how student organizations can work together on future local action projects. Students also held a "Yellow Ribbon Week" promoting STOP the Violence by displaying posters, tying ribbons to trees, distributing ribbons for faculty and students to wear, and encouraging students to sign a pledge of nonviolence.

Golden West High School, FHA-HERO
Students at Golden West High School set a goal to reach as many students and community members as possible with the STOP the Violence program. To reach their goal, they showed the video at their school, posted bulletin notices on anti-violence, and created a Blue Ribbon Panel of experts. They worked with preschool, elementary school, and at risk children on strategies to STOP violence. They also participated in an anti-violence walk/run and set up a yellow ribbon week in their school. Finally, they did a presentation of STOP the Violence at their State Conference.
