| California has long been considered one of the world's key fashion centers. In fact, the fashion and apparel industry has emerged as one of California's leading employers, with the state ranking number one in the nation as a wholesale and retail center. Certainly, few careers offer the creativity and versatility of the fashion world, as well as its fascinating history. From garment worker to fashion artist, every worker plays an important role in building and cementing California's extraordinary position as fashion capitol. |

Students pursuing the Fashion Design, Manufacturing, and Merchandising career path program study:

Students also learn employment and management skills for careers in clothing maintenance, alteration and repair; fashion design; fashion merchandising; factory and custom manufacturing; and textile design. Occupation-specific curriculum includes garment alteration and repair; garment construction and construction equipment; care and cleaning of textile products; pattern making for apparel design; developing and merchandising a fashion line; product knowledge and merchandising techniques; sales and service; visual merchandising; inventory control and loss prevention; and textile design and applied textile design.
Opportunities for employment in the fashion design, manufacturing and merchandising industry will parallel the growth in retail and wholesale trade which will continue to be a major force in this state. Some fashion careers rank among the 50 California occupations expected to undergo the largest growth over the next ten years; others, such as fashion design and merchandising, will continue their growth trend, but will begin to rely on technological breakthroughs as much as creative expression. Experts forecast strong growth in the marketing and research end of fashion, as well.
